I am contacted by two type of people. One set of people want to sell “Rashi Ratna” to me being the most famous and reliable astrologer in Pune. Second set of people want to buy “Rashi Ratna” from me, they find me a reliable and authentic source of astrology. When I say that I don’t sell anything and Rashi Ratna is a commercial concept, it’s not astrological concept, they get surprised. Many knowledgeable astrologers also raise this concern. The idea that “every person must wear a gemstone for their Rashi (Moon sign)” is largely a commercial simplification, not a rule found in classical Vedic Astrology texts. If it would have been so easy, there was no need of studying astrology for years by astrologers, and suggest many other remedies and suggestions.
Here are some logical and valid points I would like to descdribe.
1. Classical astrology does not recommend gemstones by Rashi alone
In authentic Jyotisha, gemstones are prescribed based on various factors e.g:
• Lagna (Ascendant)
• Strength and dignity of planets
• Functional benefic or malefic nature
• Overall chart balance
• Chara Karaka Planets and their dignity in horoscope
• Various mathematical formula based on traditional knowledge, classical texts and current situation of Jataka
Simply saying “Mesh Rashi → wear coral” or “Vrishabh Rashi → wear diamond” ignores the entire horoscope.
2. Classical texts emphasize Graha strength, not Rashi marketing
Gemstones are traditionally linked to strengthening weak but beneficial planets, for example:
Sun → Ruby
Moon → Pearl
Mars → Coral
Jupiter → Yellow Sapphire
But whether a person should wear them depends on the entire horoscope, many rules, multiple mathematical calculations, not just the Moon sign.
3. Blind gemstone recommendations can be harmful
If a gemstone does not suit based on a chart, it may increase problems like:
• Financial losses
• Relationship conflicts
• Health issues
• Mental stress
• Accidents
Hence, a good and ethical astrologer always recommends it after careful analysis
4. Why the “Rashi gemstone” idea became popular
The “Rashi gemstone” concept spread mainly because:
It is easy to sell commercially
Customers prefer simple one-line solutions
Jewellery marketing simplified astrology for mass appeal
But simplicity often sacrifices astrological accuracy.
5. Many Myths and Thumb rules, Shortcut Practices
I have seen clients coming with typical gemstone recommendations which are useless most of the time
• Yellow Sapphire in Index Finger either for marriage or education
• Emerald in Little Finger for Business growth
• Pearl in Little finger or Ring Finger for Mental Peace
• Gemstone of Lagnesh or Navamesh or Panchamesh
Sometimes by fluke some suggestions suit the individuals; sometimes it creates a disaster as these are not the basis of recommending a gemstone.
Conclusion
So it is fair to say that “Rashi Ratna” as a universal rule is more of a commercial practice than a classical astrological principle. Also, as per rules some gemstones one should not wear it at all which comes from their horoscopes planetary placements. Authentic gemstone recommendation requires full horoscope analysis by a knowledgeable astrologer.
